Keel Crossing opening a boon for Black Cats fans

A NEW multi-million pound crossing of the river Wear will officially open this weekend Sunderland's £31m Keel Crossing footbridge, linking the city centre with Sheepfolds and the Stadium of Light, will formally open its doors at 1.30pm on Saturday.
The public unveiling has been timed perfectly to welcome thousands of Black Cats supporters making their way to the Stadium of Light for Sunderland AFC's match against Wolves.
Keel Square will be buzzing with activity before the game, hosting family-friendly entertainment from noon. Archive footage of SAFC will be showcased on the Expo Sunderland Pavilion, accompanied by live entertainment and a chance to meet and greet former players in the lead-up to kickoff.
At 2pm, an SAFC fan parade spearheaded by This Is Wearside will set off from Keel Square and proceed over the Keel Crossing towards Sheepfolds and the Stadium of Light.
The bridge had a temporary opening on August 22, 2025, allowing Red Roses fans to make their way to the stadium for England's opening match against USA in the Women's Rugby World Cup.
Contractor Volker Stevin has now completed the necessary works to permanently open the bridge, enabling thousands of football enthusiasts to incorporate the crossing into their matchday experience.
