Fury over bus fare 'postcode lottery'

The £6.80 Tyne and Wear Day Rover public transport ticket will be removed from next April.

While North East mayor Kim McGuinness has this month extended the region's £2.50 cap on the cost of a single bus journey to March 2027, politicians also signed off a further shakeup of fares in order to “control the costs” of the public subsidies being used to reimburse private operators.

‘That includes the scrapping of the existing Tyne and Wear Day Rover, a ticket offering unlimited one-day travel across the county’s public transport systems for £6.80.

‘The Day Rover, which can be used on buses, the Shields Ferry, the Tyne and Wear Metro and train services, will be removed from April 1, 2026.
