Finish date for £9m renovation pushed into 2026

A MAJOR revamp of Newcastle’s historic Grainger Market will now take until next year to complete.

- DANIEL HOLLAND

Council bosses have confirmed that the £m overhaul of the city centre market is expected to be completed in early 2026.

The Georgian market is undergoing a series of upgrades that it is hoped will put it among the best of its kind in Europe. That includes new flooring, toilets, doors, seating, and signage, as well as a dramatic redesign of the market arcade that could allow it to stage music gigs, plays, fashion shows, and other cultural events.

It was originally hoped that the redevelopment would be finished this summer, but Newcastle City Council confirmed on Friday that the complex nature of working inside the Grade I-listed building meant that the project will likely now finish in the new year.
