Dream trip now a nightmare as Ian battling in hospital
The Journal
|June 02, 2025
A NORTHUMBERLAND couple's annual holiday has turned into a nightmare as a 47-year-old man is in hospital on multi-organ support.
Cramlington couple Ian and Sarah Wright travelled to Cyprus on May 12 to visit friends who live in the village of Tala, near Paphos.
What should have been a relaxing 10-day trip away took a turn for the worse on Sunday, May 18, when Ian started being sick when watching Newcastle's 1-0 defeat to Arsenal.
Sarah, 46, said that they had initially suspected Ian might have food poisoning. However, he has since been diagnosed with acute pancreatitis with necrosis and has been in hospital ever since.
Ian was transferred from a medical facility in Tala to Limassol General Hospital, and later transferred again to Nicosia General Hospital.
Haulage worker Ian, 47, is heavily sedated and is on dialysis, a ventilator and multi-organ support.
Ian's mum and stepfather, Monica and Andy Muckle, flew out on May 22, and Monica says that it has been "extremely hard and very, very emotional". Ian's younger brother Craig, 45, a paramedic, had also flown out but has since returned.
