BELIEVE EVERYTHING YOU HEAR AS EFTELING WILL NOT DISAPPOINT, SAYS OLIVER LEITELMAYER

TALKING litter bins? I'd heard whispers of these at a Dutch family theme park but didn’t believe a word of it.

But it’s true that at Efteling, near Tilburg in the southern Netherlands, there are indeed some garrulous garbage containers.

The Holle Bolle Gijs figures - inspired by a children’s verse character - call out to passing visitors to put their litter in its mouth and thank them when they do. It’s a fun and friendly way to send an anti-litter message amid the rides and attractions and strange animatronic figures lurking in trees and houses made of mushrooms.

What is also true at Efteling, which opened in 1952, is that it now has onsite accommodation. Looking at the 140-room Efteling Grand Hotel, you would never know it's new as it blends in seamlessly, with a quirky Budapest Hotel vibe.

There is definitely a sense of wonder about it, with a chandelier made of gold keys descending from the ceiling and a self-playing piano in the lobby. The property also features a heated pool and spa, with steam room and treatments available.

Each room is designed in colours to reflect the view of the park, and my suite was a pastel yellow to match the park’s entrance.
