NATIONAL LEAGUE

ALUN Armstrong praised his depleted Gateshead squad after they battled their way to a nerve-shredding win at Braintree Town.

The Heed were already without several experienced players by the time key midfielder Jacob Butterfield was forced to drop out of the starting 11 after taking ill during the warm-up.

Despite that blow, Armstrong’s men started well and grabbed an early lead when in form forward Kain Adom (pictured right) racked up his seventh goal of the season with just three minutes on the clock.

Even better was to follow when winger Kyle Hurst doubled the lead with a stunning strike just after the quarter-hour mark.
