A1 crash officers remain in hospital

Seven officers were taken to hospital following a pursuit on the A1 in the early hours of Wednesday.

Five police vehicles were involved in a crash with a BMW M Sport, resulting a road closure on the A1 between Junction 73 Swalwell and Junction 75 Denton for several hours.

The incident happened after officers attempted to stop a car in Whickham at around 2am due to concerns of how it was being driven.

It was later sighted in Swalwell and Northumbria Police's Roads Policing Unit was sent to the area. Shortly before 2.30am, police were in pursuit of the BMW when the crash happened.
