There can be no glossing over the fact this summer has been a disappointing one on the incoming transfer front. The Magpies have missed out on Bryan Mbeumo, Liam Delap, Joao Pedro and Hugo Ekitike, while also having held some interest in Matheus Cunha and Dean Huijsen.

All of the above have either joined other clubs or are on the verge of doing so. Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford looks set to be the next transfer target to sign elsewhere, with Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City keen to resign the England youth international despite Newcastle's £25m approach with Scott Parker's side holding firm amid their £40m valuation.
