£7.5m project to replace city's historic footbridge

A HISTORIC city centre bridge is set to be replaced as part of a £7.5m project. Funds have been earmarked for the restoration of Baths Bridge in Durham City, which will involve the construction of a new structure spanning the River Wear.

Constructed in 1898, the bridge links Pelaw Leazes Lane and Elvet Waterside, serving as a daily route for pedestrians. Durham County Council put up barriers along the bridge several years ago after identifying a deck and abutment failure.
The £7.5m project is partially financed by the North East Combined Authority's regional transport fund. North East mayor Kim McGuinness stated that the funding will ensure Baths Bridge can remain open for future generations.
