Squeeze of Sandwich Generation
The Island
|April 11, 2025
Hustle of everyday life, there’s a group quietly bearing the weight of two worlds — the sandwich generation. These are adults, typically in their 30s to 50s, wedged between raising children and caring for aging parents. And while their role may not always make headlines, the pressure they face is relentless and emotionally draining.
-
For the sandwich generation, life isn’t just about balancing a career and a family — it’s about doing so while managing medications, coordinating care, scheduling doctor’s appointments, arranging childcare, helping with homework, and often providing financial support for both generations. The sheer emotional and physical toll of being a caretaker on two fronts is rarely acknowledged, yet profoundly felt.
Imagine beginning your day preparing lunchboxes and handling school drop-offs, rushing through a demanding workday, only to spend your evening helping an elderly parent sort through medical bills or drive them to a specialist appointment. Then there are late-night math problems with your teenager, missed work deadlines, and weekend grocery runs that now include dietary needs for everyone from toddlers to seniors. There is little downtime, and even less time for self-care. Burnout isn’t a possibility; it’s a frequent companion.
