How to power-nap effectively
The Island
|December 26, 2025
In a world that celebrates constant motion and long working hours, the power nap is steadily regaining respect as a simple and effective way to restore alertness.
-
What was once viewed as a sign of idleness is now recognised as a practical response to fatigue, reduced concentration and mental overload. For many people, especially those navigating demanding jobs and crowded schedules, a brief daytime nap can offer a noticeable improvement in mood, focus and efficiency. The idea behind a power nap is not to replace a full night's sleep but to provide the brain with a short reset. Modern life often interferes with healthy sleep patterns. Late nights, early starts, screen exposure and stress all contribute to chronic sleep debt. While this debt cannot be fully repaid with naps alone, a well-timed short rest can take the edge off fatigue and help people function better through the remainder of the day.
Duration is the most critical factor in making a power nap effective. The optimal length is generally between ten and thirty minutes. Within this range, the brain rests without entering deep stages of sleep. When naps extend beyond this window, the sleeper may drift into slow wave sleep, making waking more difficult. This leads to sleep inertia, a state marked by grogginess, confusion and sluggish thinking. Instead of feeling refreshed, a person may feel worse for some time after waking. Short naps, by contrast, usually allow for a quick return to alertness.
