Hair fall: Concerns and solutions

The Island

|

August 23, 2025

For many men and women alike, hair is more than just a physical feature. It is closely tied to confidence, identity, and self-expression.

Hair fall: Concerns and solutions

This is why hair fall, though a common condition, often feels deeply personal and distressing. Dermatologists remind us that shedding up to a hundred strands a day is normal. The concern arises when the loss becomes excessive, visible patches appear, or hair noticeably thins over time.

Hair fall is rarely caused by a single factor. Genetics plays a major role, particularly in male and female pattern baldness, which tends to progress with age. Hormonal changes are another significant contributor. Pregnancy, menopause, thyroid disorders, and conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome often disrupt the body's balance, leading to hair shedding. Nutrition also has a critical role. Deficiencies in iron, vitamin D, and proteins weaken hair roots, while poor dietary habits deprive the scalp of essential nutrients.
