Engage in broader discussion on education reform

United Left Front Statement on Proposed educational reforms and allocation of funds for education

A vigorous debate has arisen in Sri Lankan society over the education reforms proposed by the government.

There have been no comprehensive education reforms for a long time. The United Left Front firmly believes that modernising the current education system to meet twenty-first-century needs is crucial. Such reforms should be rational and effective, requiring the participation of all stakeholders and ensuring transparency throughout the process.

The government's assertion that it has consulted experts regarding the proposed reforms is unacceptable. The public is not even aware that the current government has established a committee for such a purpose. What should have been done was to appoint a committee representing all stakeholders and seek public opinion. The views of stakeholders such as educationists, teachers, parents, sociologists, and child experts should have been obtained. As was done on previous occasions, the recommendations of such a committee should have been published as a White Paper, and a wide debate should have been generated. Any effort to force the proposals on society is likely to lead to negative consequences.
