India and Canada have decided to restore their bilateral relations after a two-year hiatus.

- BY S VENKAT NARAYAN, OUR SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT

High Commissioners in New Delhi and Ottawa will assume duties next month, and the two sides will discuss restarting talks for a trade agreement, visa services and other dialogue mechanisms.

These decisions came during Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s talks with newly-elected Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on Tuesday on the side-lines of the G7-outreach session in Kananaskis, Alberta. India was a special invitee.

“The Prime Ministers agreed to take calibrated steps to restore stability to this very important relationship. The first of these steps agreed upon was to restore high commissioners to each other’s capitals at an early date,” Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri announced after the meeting.
