Netanyahu submits pardon request to Israeli president

Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu has submitted an official pardon request to President Isaac Herzog, the president's office confirmed yesterday.
Mr Herzog's office acknowledged the “extraordinary request which carries with it significant implications”, adding that the president would “responsibly and sincerely consider the request” after receiving all relevant opinions.
There was no immediate comment from the prime minister’s office. Mr Netanyahu faces a long-running corruption trial, denying the charges and pleading not guilty. He was indicted in 2019 on charges of bribery, fraud and breach of trust. He was accused of accepting expensive gifts and exchanging regulatory favours with media owners for positive press coverage.
