Benjamin Netanyahu extends target date to leave tomorrow, putting ceasefire agreement with Hezbollah under pressure
Israeli forces will remain in parts of southern Lebanon beyond the agreed deadline to leave tomorrow, said Benjamin Netanyahu, throwing the ceasefire deal with Hezbollah into crisis.
Under the deal, which came into effect on 27 November, Hezbollah weapons and fighters must be removed from areas south of the Litani river and Israeli troops should withdraw as the Lebanese military deploys into the region, all within a 60day timeframe due to conclude tomorrow at 0400 local time (GMT 0200).
The deal, brokered by the United States and France, ended more than a year of hostilities between Israel and the Iranbacked Hezbollah. Brian Hughes, White House National Security Council spokesperson, said yesterday that a ceasefire extension was needed.
