THE weekend starts here. A new event bringing together Plymouth writers, artists and musicians so they can mix and share ideas will debut next Friday and is fittingly called The Weekend.

It's the brainchild of Plymouth poet and artist Ed Tapper, who said: “I want to bring together poets, artists and musicians to showcase the best creative talent in the city for regular evenings of live poetry and new art”

Held at The Almanac Cafe, on the first floor of the former Arts Centre building, on Batter Street, The Weekend is free to attend and takes place from 6.30pm to 9pm on October 17.

The “star reader” on its inaugural night will be Plymouth poet Melisande Fitzsimons, who writes in her native French as well as in English, and whose published collections include A Language of Spies, Life Here is Full of Tomorrows and The Only Country in the World.

Also reading is Lorna Stubbs, an exciting new name on the Plymouth poetry scene.

Ed said: “Lorna comes from a coal mining community in mid-Scotland and her work explores the rich language and history of home and family’

There are also featured artists Lesley Bricknell and Chris Drake.
