Wages for city's women 'need to rise'

RAISING women's wages in Plymouth has been flagged up again as being the key to tackling poverty in the city.
Plymouth City Council recently heard the city's female workers earn on average £4 less an hour than men, and 80% are on less than the national median pay of £38,000.
Speaking at the council's housing and community services scrutiny panel on Wednesday, Cllr Chris Penberthy (Lab, St Peter and the Waterfront), cabinet member for housing, co-operative development and communities, said this is having a knock-on effect on women's pensions and their ability to look after dependents. He said young girls are not seeing role models of women fulfilling their potential because they had been held back by the system in Plymouth.
