SWIMMERS SLAM 'EYESORE NEEDING INVESTMENT'

- By KATIE OBORN

Tinside left in a 'sorry state'

SWIMMERS in Plymouth have been advised to stay out of the water at one of Britain's Ocean City’s most cherished coastal locations.

The warning follows devastating damage caused by Storm Ingrid in January 2026, which battered the South West and left Plymouth Hoe’s Tinside Beach area severely affected by enormous waves, including a flight of steps leading into the sea being entirely washed away.

Yet regular swimmers, who brave the waters daily throughout the year, say the destruction has exposed just “what an eyesore” the surrounding area has become.

They’re now demanding investment to restore Tinside Beach as a “fabulous asset” for Plymouth.

During a visit to the area recently, I noticed “no swimming” notices erected by Plymouth City Council, cautioning people about “sharp spikes and debris” alongside “dangerous and uneven surfaces”.

For years, this spot has been a favourite swimming location, offering far more than just a quick plunge. The area draws locals throughout every season, regardless of weather conditions, with some describing it as vital for their mental wellbeing as well as providing the benefits of wild swimming.

However, following the destruction of concrete steps and multiple railings during recent storms, swimmers report that accessing the water “safely” has become challenging. Numerous residents have also voiced concerns that the area had already deteriorated and become “rundown” before the storm damage, despite continuing to attract holidaymakers during the summer months.
