A-LEVEL students across the country received their grades yesterday, paving the way for future plans and sparking celebrations for many with schools in Plymouth and the surrounding region sharing many success stories.

- By ANDY PHILLIPS

At Devonport High School for Girls, almost two-thirds of A-level grades achieved were A*, A or B, and more than one in ten of their students were awarded A/A* grades across the board.

School leaders said that the results mean DHSG is 'one of the country's top mixed-sex state Sixth Forms for outcomes and is the highest performing in Plymouth and surrounding areas'.

The school said that this year has also seen their first-ever male student - as boys can study A-levels at DHSG - gain a place at Oxford.

Assistant Head Teacher and Head of Sixth Form Ed Lamb said: "We are fantastically lucky to work with such a group of talented young people. The results this year once again reflected the diligence, determination and intellectual curiosity of our students, and they go on to become leaders in a range of disciplines and fields My thanks also go to their teachers whose knowledge, expertise and experience have nurtured them from day one."

At Hele's School, James Ferrier achieved three A* grades, in Maths, Theatre Studies and Computer Science, and will now pursue a career in musical theatre.

Isobel Prowse received two A* grades and an A, in Biology, Maths and Physics, and is heading to Exeter University to study Mathematics.

Oliver Chard received an A* and two A grades, in Religious Studies, History and Sociology, as well as a B for the Extended Project Qualification, and will study Global Politics at the University of Warwick with a year abroad in Brussels.

Christopher Trurner also achieved three A grades, in Business Studies, Criminology and Sociology, and contributed further as the outgoing Plympton Youth Ambassador.

Aidan Hannon is to read Politics and International Studies at the University of Warwick after achieving A*, A and B grades in Drama, Geography and History. Staff said his contribution to supporting performing arts has been exceptional.
