Randle departure is further evidence of Argyle’s instability

THE head of recruitment at a football club has become a key role over recent years with the ever increasing importance of transfer window activity.

You can certainly argue that one of the main reasons for Plymouth Argyle’s struggles, first in the extremely competitive Championship and now in the still demanding League One at the start of this season, is that their signings have not contributed enough.

Take this summer, for example. It felt to many as though there was too much emphasis on younger players with potential for development and not enough on players proven at the level, and there needed to be a better balance with that.

Some of Argyle’s summer signings could go on to become good players for the club, and in their future careers, but it feels very much like a team in transition at the moment, and that does tend to lead to challenges along the way.

The 2026 winter transfer window will be a chance for the Pilgrims to maybe add some experience and depth in key areas of the squad, but they are going to go into it with a new head of recruitment.
