MPs join call for more places at dental school

CROSS-PARTY CALL FOR MORE DENTISTS TO BE TRAINED
THERE has been a call for increased dental training places from three MPs who represent Plymouth constituencies. Fred Thomas, Luke Pollard and Rebecca Smith have all signed a letter arguing for a 25% increase in the number of dental students being trained at Plymouth's Peninsula Dental School.
Peninsula currently accepts 58 new dental students each year. The campaign by the MPs, backed by Plymouth City Council's cross-party Dental Taskforce, is calling for that figure to rise to 72 places, which is the national average for dental schools.
Construction of the new city centre urgent care dental hub by the dental school is underway at the council's old One Stop Shop on New George Street. The dental school is reportedly now keen to expand further, providing more training places that will treat local people as part of their studies and see more dentists graduate to stay in the south west.
