Fox adamant that any new recruit must be the right fit for Pilgrims

DAVID Fox, Plymouth Argyle’s head of football operations, is hoping a deal to bring in another striker is close but is adamant it has to be ‘the right one’.
The Pilgrim started their 2025/26 League One campaign with only two out-and-out forwards in their squad, 22-year-old duo Owen Oseni and Bim Pepple, with the latter debuting at Bolton on Saturday after suffering a hamstring issue.
Argyle missed out on the signing of Dale Taylor from Nottingham Forest last week as he opted for Blackpool instead and the Pilgrims had previously held a strong interest in forward Rumarn Burrell but he opted to join Championship side Queens Park Rangers, who the Pilgrims faced at Home Park in the Carabao Cup last night, instead after both clubs had agreed a transfer fee with Burton Albion for the 24-year-old.
Argyle are still trying to fill their number nine shirt which has been vacant since the reported £700,000 transfer of Ryan Hardie to Wrexham in June, while forwards Mustapha Bundu, Michael Obafemi and Ben Waine also moved on over the summer.
“We are working hard to try and get another striker in the building,” said Fox. “We have signed two strikers. It's a very rare situation to walk into a football club and you have got no centre-forward. I think that's always difficult.
“That's something we will look to avoid in the future in terms of how we succession plan the squad so there is not a point where there is player out of contract, a player returns on loan and a player that leaves.
“We need to make sure we are more protected, which we have done with the signings we have made, and we are in the market for one more and we are working hard to get one done.
“What I would say is that bringing one in before Saturday won't get us promoted but I think if we bring the wrong one in that makes things really difficult. It has to be the right one.
