Flooding causes roads chaos

TRAFFIC SNARL-UPS AND STREET CLOSURES
TORRENTIAL rain saw roads flooded and buildings inundated with water yesterday with warnings of further rainfall last night and into this morning.
The city’s road network was brought to a standstill in places from around mid-morning, as the drainage system struggled under the deluge.
Gdynia Way was closed in both directions before 11am, as heavy rain flooded the carriageway from Embankment Lane to Shapters Road, while Embankment Road itself was also shut.
The A374 Exeter Street was closed southbound after a multi-vehicle crash during the downpour, while King Street in Stonehouse was also closed due to flooding from Octagon Street to Western Approach.
Theatre Royal Plymouth was forced to close after bosses said the basement had been flooded, while University of Plymouth’s Emdeck building was evacuated due to the rain. A witness said: “The car park has also been entirely flooded.”
