Areas of city named as burglary hotspots
The Herald
|March 18, 2025
PLYMOUTH has Devon's burglary hotspot, according to new figures - but official data shows that only a fraction of break-ins result in the culprit being brought to justice, with households facing a 'postcode lottery' in detection rates.
There were 3,762 crime reports of burglaries recorded in the Devon and Cornwall Police Force Area in 2024, with 216 cases 5.7% resulting in a suspect being charged or cautioned.
Plymouth's City Centre, Barbican and Sutton Harbour had the highest number of burglaries, with 95 recorded. Of those, 14 cases resulted in a charge or caution.
In three Devon neighbourhoods - Middlemoor & Sowton in Exeter, Blatchcombe & Blagdon in Torbay, and Shiphay & the Willows, also in Torbay - there were more than 30 burglaries recorded during 2024 without a single suspect being charged or cautioned.
