STAR REVEALS SECRETS OF THE THEATRE ROYAL SHOW TAHUN

- ANDY PHILLIPS

Aladdin's golden performance

THE star of the Disney musical Aladdin which is currently playing at Theatre Royal Plymouth has revealed the attention to detail which has gone into the show – with one outfit being worth more than £25,000 alone.

Gavin Adams, who plays Aladdin, leads an international cast in the musical which is playing in the city until Sunday, February 11.

But on top of pitch-perfect vocals, athletic moves and crisp choreography, audiences are being wowed by an incredible backdrop designed to recreate the city of Agrabah from the classic Disney movie.

Gavin said the costumes alone have been meticulously refined, and drip with dazzling colours as well as quality.

He told The Herald that the scene where Aladdin first meets the Genie in the cave sees the entire stage glitter with gold – with outfits to match.

He said: “During Friend Like Me, when we are doing the tap routine, all the boys are wearing those shiny golden trousers, and each pair of those trousers has 1,428 Swarovski crystals embedded into it, which I think is just incredible.

“The most expensive costume actually, considering it only gets about 40 seconds of stage time, is the Prince Abdullah costume.

“He only comes on at the beginning of the show, but his costume is worth £25,000-£30,000 – and it’s only shown for a few seconds!

“But that just goes to how much detail the set designer and the costume designer puts into this show – because it is so colouful, and the attention to detail is immaculate.” It is the stage debut for the 25-year

old, who was born in Hong Kong to a British father and Cantonese mother, but spent his formative years in Shanghai.
