Cleverley said: “With me being from Bradford and he managed Bradford he's someone whose career I have followed. Tomorrow will be the first time we have met.

“He's coming in as a technical director so this is his first delve into that side of football. The guys that have had success at this football club in the past inspire me.

“I have got no doubts that we will get there one day. It's going to be a long, hard road but no-one is more prepared than me to never give up and roll my sleeves up.”

Cleverley was first told about Adams coming in as director of football ‘a couple of days ago’, following the 3-1 League One defeat at Huddersfield Town.

He said: “I think honestly when (head of recruitment) Tom Randle left the club, David is doing a job for three people. We will speak tomorrow whether we bring a head of recruitment in as well or whether David fronts that up. It's an area we are keen to strengthen in with a view to January.”

When it was put to Cleverley that some people would see Adams as a potential replacement for him as head coach, given Argyle's torrid time at the moment, he replied: “I'm not silly. It's externally what you would think.
