UK slashes funding for global vaccine group after foreign aid cuts
The Guardian
|June 26, 2025
The UK has cut its funding to a leading global vaccination group by a quarter, a move experts said would directly lead to the avoidable deaths of many thousands of children in developing countries.
The Foreign Office billed the £1.25bn commitment over five years to the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunisation (Gavi) as a boost to Gavi's work, as well as to the UK's status as a vaccine developer. A series of aid agencies praised the decision.
It is a larger sum than feared by many in the aid world after the decision by the UK government to cut its foreign aid commitment from 0.7% of national income to 0.5%.
