Streeting improves offer to resident doctors in England in attempt to stop next week’s strikes

In a sign that his move may prove enough to persuade the BMA to call off next week’s walkout, the union agreed to put the offer to resident doctors in a survey.

It promised that it would cancel the five-day stoppage due to start on 17 December if that is what those taking part want.That strike has caused huge alarm across an NHS that is already struggling to deal with 1,700 people in hospital beds with flu - a record for the time of year - and a growing number of hospitals having to declare a “critical incident” because they cannot cope with the number.
