Private donor pays for Salmond's body to be flown back to Scotland

A private donor has paid to repatriate Alex Salmond's body from North Macedonia, after the Foreign Office rejected calls for the RAF to do so.
The former first minister of Scotland died suddenly of a heart attack during a conference lunch at the resort of Ohrid on Saturday. Allies of Salmond, including the Conservative MP David Davis, had pressed for the RAF to fly his body home, which the Times reported could have cost up to £600,000, or for the Scottish government to fund a charter flight. Scottish government sources yesterday denied reports that it would do so, before it emerged that a private individual had stepped in.
