Ministers working to ban political donations made in cryptocurrency

A ban on political donations made with cryptocurrency is on the way but is unlikely to be part of an elections bill due early next year, Whitehall sources revealed yesterday.
The government is said to believe that donations made with digital tokens are a risk to the integrity of the electoral system, not least because the source can be hard to verify.
However, the complex nature of crypto means officials do not believe a ban will be workable by the time the elections bill is published in the new year. The legislation is expected to lower the voting age to 16 and reduce loopholes in political finance.
Banning crypto donations would be a blow to Nigel Farage's Reform, which became the first UK party to accept contributions in digital currency this autumn. It has set up a crypto portal for donations, saying it conducts "enhanced" checks.
