Magnificent ancient oak in the Highlands is UK tree of the year

An ancient oak named after a ceilidh band won the UK's tree of the year competition yesterday and will now compete in the European edition.
The Skipinnish oak in Lochaber in the Highlands was discovered by chance by members of the band of that name, who were playing a nearby gig for the Native Woodlands Discussion Group.
It is in the middle of a Sitka spruce timber plantation and, luckily enough, there were expert delegates from the group who registered it in the ancient tree inventory.
