Fruitful result Subtropical trees thriving in capital win protection

The Guardian

August 08, 2025

They have stood, slightly incongruously, on a street in south-west London for 40-odd years - a pair of subtropical grapefruit trees described as a gift from Grenada since Marline Anderson brought them over from her homeland and planted them in the front yard of her home.

- Kevin Rawlinson

And they will stand there for much longer as a living memorial to Anderson, who died recently, after campaigners seeking protection for the trees were told they had been successful yesterday.

Vasilisa Ermakova, a neighbour of Anderson, said it was not only about the preservation of the trees, which resemble one tree because of how closely together they were planted, but also preserving her friend's memory. "It's almost like she will live for ever, in my eyes."
