Adults with an ADHD diagnosis have shorter life expectancy, study shows

Men with an ADHD diagnosis die an average of seven years earlier than similar people without one, while for women the life expectancy gap is almost nine years, the first study of its kind has shown.
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder can cause difficulties in concentration and problems with impulsiveness, although people with the condition do not necessarily experience both.
Joshua Stott, a senior author of the research and professor at University College London, said: "For this group of people, they have a reduction in life expectancy that is significant, on average, and is disconcerting."
A previous study, which also suggested people with ADHD had lower life expectancy, was not based on recorded deaths. But the UCL study used primary care data from more than 9 million UK adults, from 2000 to 2019, to explore whether ADHD was associated with a shorter life.
