A grand day out: Aardman exhibition at Young V&A to celebrate feats of clay

Aardman studios is known around the world for its seamlessly animated stop-motion train chases, hacked smart gnomes, cheese-eating heroes and villainous penguins.

Now it is offering its legions of fans a cracking new adventure: a behind-the-scenes look at its best known projects in a major exhibition at the Young V&A in east London.

The curators of Inside Aardman: Wallace & Gromit and Friends, which opens in February, are promising a unique chance to see the creative processes that brought Morph, Shaun the Sheep and Feathers McGraw to life.

Alex Newson, chief curator at the Young V&A, said he wanted the exhibition to “demystify” the stop-motion animation process and show a new generation of children how their favourite films are made.

“There’s a phenomenal amount of skill and technique that goes into making animations in the way that Aardman do,” he said. “But anyone can make stop-motion animation at home with minimal equipment.”
