Inheriting a gift for art from his father, Thomas, he studied at Cleveland College of Art & Design. His other passion was for music and songwriting, inspired by his maternal Nanna.

A school teacher introduced him to R&B. Not his music teacher, but his science teacher covering class by playing his record collection.

His sister's love of Elvis and Little Richard was a catalyst for Coverdale's visceral response of singing from the gut.

David left college to support his family. While busy working at Coatham Road's Gentry boutique, he was rehearsing at guitarist Alan Fearnley's Linthorpe record shop.
