Wetherspoon 'very keen' to open new pub on Teesside

PUB chain Wetherspoon has said it is “very keen” to open a boozer in Thornaby after meeting with a local MP.

Stockton West Conservative MP Matt Vickers said he had “welcomed a senior Wetherspoon boss to Thornaby to look at options for a new Spoons”.

He said he pitched the idea of a new pub on the site of the Golden Eagle, the derelict former hotel which was hit with an arson attack on Sunday evening.

Mr Vickers previously ran a petition calling for action and sits on the Town Deal Board which set tackling long-term vacant properties in Thornaby town centre as one of its priorities for spending almost £24m of government money.

Last week he wrote on social media: “Today, I brought together Thornaby’s town centre managers and Wetherspoon to pitch the potential for a new Spoons on the Golden Eagle site!
