Silent film gives a voice to men's mental health

AN award-winning North-east filmmaker is striving to address men’s mental health through his new film “Convalescence”.
Michelle Augustine has produced impactful works in Middlesbrough, including this short silent film he both wrote and directed. The film highlights the serious challenges men face regarding mental health, ‘using silence as a powerful metaphor for the emotional suppression that often arises from societal expectations surrounding masculinity.
The 34-year-old creative director, based in Darlington, said: “By visually portraying this silent suffering, ‘Convalescence’, pictured below, confronts the stigma that discourages emotional expression and fosters open discussions. The working-class backdrop of Middlesbrough lends authenticity to the story, amplifying the film’s message.”
He emphasizes that mental health remains a pressing issue for men, and his project aims to promote healing, understanding, and a shift toward healthier emotional narratives. “’Convalescence’ serves as a call for empathy and much-needed change,’ he added.
