Proposal to expand play-offs

THE EFL is said to be considering a National League-style expansion of the Championship playoff system - which could have huge implications for Middlesbrough in the future.

According to a new report from The Athletic, a proposal to increase the number of teams who qualify for the playoffs at the end of the season to six has received “wide initial support” from member clubs. It is said to have been presented by Preston North End chief executive Peter Ridsdale at a meeting last week, for which Boro's equivalent, Neil Bausor, sits on the board.
