POLICE TACKLE SAFETY ISSUES ON STRETCH OF A689

POLICE are ramping up safety measures at an accident blackspot rated as the most harmful in Cleveland.
Earlier this month a blue Audi A5 and a grey Seat Leon collided on the A689 Stockton Road near the Esso Garage in Hartlepool.
Fortunately no serious injuries were reported; however, the stretch of road has an unenviable record for collisions, some of which have been fatal.
Cleveland Police has launched an operation targeting the area after the introduction of a Road Harm Index (RHI). This pinpoints hotspots on roads where the most harm is caused, with the stretch of the A689 Stockton Road, near to the Belle Vue area, scoring the highest due to the number of serious and deadly collisions.
There were 12 collisions on the A689 in the RHI area in the last three years; two of them fatal. The force said that, over the last three years, 56% of these collisions have involved speeding as a factor, 44% have involved drivers under the influence of alcohol or drugs and 11% involved some form of distraction, such as mobile phone use.
