SAFETY CAMPAIGN CHECKS YIELD POSITIVE RESULTS

Majority of bars pass 'Ask for Angela' test

BARS in Teesside have delivered promising results when tested on a scheme to help keep women safe.

'Ask for Angela' mystery shoppers have tested out bars across the region using the three-word request which was formulated to help women feel safe when they go out.

In the recent test of staff knowledge, venues returned a promising result, according to the Police and Crime Commissioner for Cleveland's office.

Volunteers covertly attended premises across the area's four boroughs and asked for 'Angela'.

The goal was to make sure that if a vulnerable person approached a member of staff, the appropriate safeguarding measures were carried out.

'Ask for Angela' has been operating in areas nationwide since 2016. The scheme was named in memory of Angela Phillips, a woman who was tragically abused and killed by her husband in 2012. The safety phrase alerts bar, security or floor staff when a person feels they're in a dangerous situation.
