ONE of nature's masters of disguises the jack snipe has been recorded in large numbers in Cleveland.
There have been huge falls of these small, dumpy waders wherever there are marshy areas, such as South Gare, Coatham Marsh and RSPB Saltholme.
In fact there were no fewer than nine of these rare migrants seen at the same time at Saltholme last week. The reserve wardens had a telescope trained on the birds to show them to visitors.
Spotting nine jack snipes in one small area must be something of a record. It’s not unusual to fail to see a jack snipe at any time in Cleveland during a 12 month period.
