Cebu's new archbishop has a timely reminder to people ahead of the Christmas season: celebrate Christmas simply and with compassion for the poor.

“Let our homes shine not with lights but with love. Let our parishes be filled not with noise but with prayer. Let our celebrations focus not on abundance but on presence-God's presence and each other's presence,” Cebu Archbishop Alberto Uy said in a report in this newspaper.
Uy also said the money saved from avoiding extravagant celebrations can serve a greater purpose like helping someone in need.
