‘The Life of Chuck’ delivers poignant tale of life and death

Life does not end with its conclusion, but rather with its beginning. That's what Mike Flanagan's adaptation of Stephen King's short story tells viewers in this bittersweet coming-of-age tale about living life to the fullest.

Currently showing exclusively at Ayala Cinemas, “The Life of Chuck” centers on its titular character in various stages of his life, told in three acts in reverse chronological order: the end, the middle, and the start — all narrated by Nick Offerman.

Tom Hiddleston plays Charles “Chuck” Krantz, a skilled accountant and a gifted dancer. Jacob Tremblay, Benjamin Pajak, and Cody Flanagan portray younger versions of Hiddleston’s character.

This review outlines the general premise of each act, although major plot points won’t be revealed. Proceed with caution.

The first act does not feature much of Chuck himself but instead focuses on a teacher, Marty (Chiwetel Ejiofor), and a nurse, Felicia (Karen Gillan): ex-lovers who reunite in the middle of an apocalypse while encountering advertisements thanking Chuck for a “wonderful 39 years.”
