Police on the watch against port concerns

With the approaching Yuletide season, which may draw an influx of arrivals, the Cebu City Police Office (CCPO) has intensified its efforts to address complaints of alleged fare overpricing and improper passenger handling, including the implementation of a makeshift terminal.

On Monday, November 24, the Mabolo Police Station 4, led by Station Commander Police Major Eric Gingoyon, conducted roving patrols and inspections within the premises of Piers 4, 5, and 6 in Barangay Carreta, Cebu City.

The police stepped in after receiving complaints from arriving passengers about alleged overpricing and unfair fare practices by taxi and motorcycle-for-hire drivers, as well as improper parking that caused congestion within the pier vicinity.

Although parking protocols have been visibly implemented, Gingoyon explained that these are still not being followed, as it has become a habit for many to take advantage just to be first in line.

During the operation, he said they had already spoken to some taxi drivers about this matter. In response, a makeshift terminal has already been set up where they can line up while waiting for passengers at the pier.

He also mentioned that taxi drivers' failure to follow the queue could oftentimes lead to fights.
