Not just in flood infra

The Freeman

While recent events have cast light on corruption in flood-control infrastructure dealings all over the country, we all know that corruption isn't limited here.

The reality is that corruption has become quite common in many aspects of life in the Philippines. Sadly, we can even say that in some sectors it has become a way of life.

Here are some examples. Some people cannot get into certain jobs without the support of some backers. Some applicants cannot apply for certain schools without the same.

Some people cannot get quick service without “padangog” or grease money. Some sales people have to bribe clients with perks or privileges to patronize their products.

Before some government offices went full digital or were relocated to prime locations where crowd control could be better enforced, fixers who could guarantee priority had their heyday. That's still a form of corruption any way you look at it.

Remember that not too long ago some officials were accused of accepting bribes to let questionable foreigners into the country.

But corruption isn't just for those in high or public office.
