Military drives away Chinese fishing boats

The Armed Forces of the Philippines said troops under its Western Command intercepted and drove away Chinese fishing boats allegedly engaged in illegal fishing near Ayungin Shoal in the West Philippine Sea last week, confiscating bottles of suspected cyanide chemicals believed to be used for destructive fishing.

In a statement released Sunday, October 26, AFP spokesperson Col. Xerxes Trinidad said the incident took place on October 24 near Ayungin (Second Thomas) Shoal, where Philippine forces maintain a small outpost through the grounded warship BRP Sierra Madre.

Trinidad said AFP personnel “promptly escorted the unauthorized fishing boats out of the area” after discovering suspected cyanide containers aboard the vessels. The substance, commonly used in illegal fishing, can destroy coral reefs and marine life by poisoning fish and bleaching reefs.
