Lapu-Lapu probes damage to Caubian seawall, corals

The Lapu-Lapu City Government has launched an investigation into the damage an abandoned vessel allegedly caused to the seawall and sea corals off Caubian Island after it drifted due to strong waves brought by the ongoing weather disturbance.

Engineers from the City Engineering Office were deployed to inspect the site, while the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) were tapped to assess the extent of the damage. The assessment is being coordinated with the Philippine Coast Guard and the city’s Coastal Resource Management Office.
Mayor Cindi King-Chan said the incident underscores the importance of the seawall in protecting coastal communities from strong waves and drifting vessels during severe weather.
“I think without the seawall, residents there could have faced serious danger or even lost their lives,” Chan said.
She added that the city is also monitoring the vessel for possible oil leaks, noting that many Caubian Island residents rely on fishing for their livelihood.
