Cebu City Council okays P20-per-kilo rice rollout

The Cebu City Council approved a resolution backing the rollout of the P20-per-kilo rice to the public, and granting Mayor Nestor Archival the authority to sign, in behalf of the city government, a memorandum of agreement (MOA) with the Food Terminal Inc. (FTI) to start the distribution.

The resolution, filed by Councilor Pastor “Jun” Alcover, faced three weeks of delay first before finally passing through during the regular session last Tuesday, and after hurdling some objections that led to a vote among members.
One of those who manifested concern over the resolution was Vice Mayor Tomas Osmeña. “They still have not provided the details on the safeguards, the limits, and the equitable distribution, and they are supposed to look at the other models,” he said.
The Council presiding officer also cited the situation in Mandaue City, where hundreds of sacks of rice reportedly spoiled. He noted: “They are already passing the blame to each other.”
