Bogo Bay Fault source of devastating quake

The Phivolcs Quick Response Team (QRT) conducted initial fieldwork in Barangay Nailon, Bogo City, where they identified clear surface ruptures associated with the fault.
-
In a statement, the QRT reported that ground rupture mapping in Barangay Dakit, Bogo City revealed right-lateral displacements measuring up to 30 centimeters horizontally and 25 centimeters vertically.
During an onsite press briefing attended by officials from the Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development (DHSUD) and the Office of Civil Defense (OCD-7), QRT head Deo Carlo Llamas emphasized the risks posed by the fault to areas directly transected by the rupture, prompting him to recommend the relocation of affected houses for community safety.
Llamas said the continuous cracking of the ground observed in Bogo and nearby areas is a direct manifestation of fault movement. “Ang maganda po dito ay nagpakita na yung fault. So magiging aware yung tao nasaan lokasyon ng fault,” Llamas explained. He added that building structures directly on top of the fault line is dangerous because they are bound to collapse.
Furthermore, initial mapping showed about two kilometers of rupture as of October 2, but further analysis suggests the fault may extend much farther—possibly 40 to 50 kilometers when both land and offshore segments are considered.
